Recently, a storm blew into Philadelphia and changed the lives of one family and a very ill and malnourished dog.

When a dog, now named Suzy, decided to take advantage of an open door, she didn’t know she would be made part of the family. Sports podcast host Jack Jokinen explained what happened.

At around 4:00 a.m., Jokinen’s wife woke him. When she went downstairs to find a pacifier for their baby, she saw what she described as a puppy in their house.

Jokinen went downstairs to investigate. He checked all the doors and windows and found them to be locked tight. He couldn’t imagine how the dog got inside. Then, he reviewed what their security camera caught.

The night before, Jokinen had walked their other dog. When they returned home, he thought he’d locked the door. But the door didn’t latch properly and when the storm came, the fierce winds blew their door wide open.

Remarkably, about 20 minutes after Suzy wandered inside, a passerby seemed to notice it strange that the door was standing open in the middle of the night. He kindly closed the door and went on his way.

The next morning, Jokinen called Animal Control who advised them to surrender the dog or take her to their vet.

He and his wife decided to take her to their vet.

They discovered that the “puppy” was actually 9 years old. She also had teeth damage, fleas and a missing paw pad.

By then, the Jokinens knew they wanted to keep Suzy “to give her a dignified end of her life.”

Jokinen opened up his Venmo to accept donations for Suzy’s care, but they are fully prepare to care for her regardless of donations.

We’re going to turn this negative into a positive for the holiday season.

I mean, we didn’t expect it, but out of all the bad things that could happen when your front door is open, to end up with a sweet dog who just needs a home.

I mean, wow, this could have gone a lot worse.

This time, a perfect storm in a big, busy city brought a perfect love and home for a little, lonely dog.
