Sometimes, you just gotta learn things the hard way in life.
And some people can’t get out of their own way and they ALWAYS learn everything the hard way…but we’ve all been there at least once before…
What did you learn the hard way?
Here’s how AskReddit users responded.
1. Yup.
“I’m not the center of anyone’s Universe but my own.
Nobody’s coming to the rescue but me.”
2. Act accordingly.
“Your house, wedding, child, job, etc. isn’t nearly as important to anyone else as it is to you.
Act accordingly.”
3. Protect those ears.
“Wear earplugs when it’s too loud.
I used to go to the huge arena shows and stand up front with my ear pretty much on the speaker. Installed huge db car stereos. Fire g**s. No ear plugs. My hearing is wonky now.
Most of the time it seems fine, just certain frequencies, and like in a bar or restaurant where everyone is talking I can’t understand. My stepdad is the same from Vietnam. Helicopters and g**s and stuff. I wear earplugs now.”
4. That’s life.
“Just because you put effort into something doesn’t mean it’ll work out.
My boss: “Sometimes you do everything right and it still doesn’t work out.””
5. You can only do so much.
“You can’t control another person’s actions, but you can tell them how they make you feel, and it’s okay not to stick around if they’re unable to respect your boundaries.”
6. Uh oh…
“Always, always, tie your shoe laces before getting on the escalator.
Trust me.”
7. FYI.
“If a relationship doesn’t work, it doesn’t work.
You can’t will it to work.
Also, getting divorced is a hell of a lot harder than breaking off an engagement.”
8. Definitely don’t do this.
“Don’t drive when you’re extremely tired.
That one was expensive.”
9. What else can you do?
“You can’t help someone who isn’t trying to help themselves.
Or, don’t light yourself on fire to keep someone else warm.
I’ve used that phrase countless times in my life. A sentiment I hold close.”
10. Good idea.
“Missing a few credit card payments will tank your credit, even if it’s perfect.
It’s better to call your creditors and let them know that you can’t pay.”
11. Let it sink in.
“Doing things for love instead of out of love will ruin you and you will always be chasing breadcrumbs from the partner that makes you feel that way.”
12. True.
“Being alone (as in, not in a relationship) is 100x better than being in a s**tty “relationship”. So many people are so afraid of being “alone” that they’ll enter any relationship, no matter how s**tty.
Just don’t.
Being in a good relationship with someone is wonderful, but don’t lie to yourself if the relationship you’re in is less than good.”
13. Pro tip.
“Procrastinating and avoiding problems doesn’t work as a long term strategy.
It’s like a game of Tetris. If you clear the lines at he bottom of the screen it’s really easy.
As soon as you’ve let it all pile up you struggle to see how to deal with even a single piece”
Now we want to hear from you.
