From Generation X through the end of the Millennial generation, for sure, kids were sold the idea that you had to go to college and get a degree in order to make something of your life.

It wasn’t until the economy and the housing market and pretty much everything else spun out of control in the early aughts that we realized we’d been sold a lie – and a good number of us have been trying to climb out of debt ever since.

If you’re inclined to think thirty-somethings are just whiny whiners, take a look at these 14 pictures that pretty much prove the loan companies have made it impossible to put that debt behind us.

14. It is indeed a scam.

How do we get them to stop?

Thank you student loans

11. They owe not one penny less.

That’s got to be disheartening.

9. Definitely seems like it’s only in their best interests.

I mean, who do they think they’re fooling?

A third of my student loan debt is from Sallie Mae, and they send me shit like this.

8. Yeah, no thanks.

Even lawyers don’t make enough money to keep that up.

5. I’m not seeing the incentive.

Except them getting another person in debt, too.

4. I assure you, we are not ready.

We will never be ready.

3. Those are your choices.

Go ahead and choose one.

“Hey kids, would you rather die fighting over oil or die paying back student debt?”

2. Can confirm.

I seriously doubt that anyone is thrilled about it.

Saw this on Facebook and I just HAD to share it.

1. That’s one word for it.

If you don’t want to get mad, I mean.

On the back of my student loan bill. So disheartening.

It’s kind of depressing to see it all in black and white, right?
