Are you prepared for a poignant and heartbreaking story?

Grab the tissues.

A 24-year old man who was recently diagnosed with cancer had a few things to say on Reddit. Under the user name u/mylastie, he wrote an incredibly touching post sharing what he thinks life is really about. His user name was apropos as he has chosen the last tie he will ever wear.

The title simply reads:

“Soon I will be gone forever, but that’s okay as long as someone reads this.”

Over 64,000 replies and comments came in after reading his message:

In his message, he states that he has not lived an impactful life. Now, with death knocking on his door, he understands the value of life and what it can offer.

He’s also mindful in the simplicity of life and the things that matter.

He’s hopeful that the people reading his post will understand it.

“Let your life be shaped by decisions you made, not by the ones you didn’t.”

In the end, he helps us realize the rat race means nothing, the mundane life we set for ourselves can be changed. He urges us to “Leave our mark in the world.”

That doesn’t mean making millions, being famous, or even achieving influencer status. It means to examine your own soul and live true to it, whatever that may be. And while you’re “living it” remember to appreciate what you have around you.

Simple. Beautiful. Achingly powerful.

In the beginning, he allows us a lens into his life which includes the last tie he will ever wear.

Maybe what this represents is that life is too short not to enjoy the small wonders around us. We may never know but he has found solace in this tie.

Strangely it makes me smile while surrounded by his thoughts and convictions.  His message is powerful in many ways: from his words to his user name, and of course the tie itself.

Rest in peace.
